Lockheed Martin has completed the acquisition of software and systems engineering company Integration Innovation Inc’s (i3) Hypersonics portfolio.
The transaction was announced last month by Lockheed Martin.
This deal is expected to boost the capabilities of Lockheed Martin for the design, development and production of integrated hypersonic weapon systems.
As part of the deal, former i3 CEO Mike Wicks will assume the role of vice-president of Hypersonic Engineering & Accelerated Technologies programme, which is a part of the Hypersonic Strike Portfolio for Lockheed Martin Space.
Lockheed Martin is headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, US, and employs around 110,000 people worldwide.
The company’s Space business area will manage i3’s Hypersonics portfolio.
In June last year, the US Air Force (USAF) performed the maiden flight test of its air-launched rapid response weapon (ARRW) hypersonic weapon on a B-52 Stratofortress aircraft.
Conducted out of Edwards Air Force Base in California, US, the test saw the B-52 carry a sensor-only version of the AGM-183A ARRW externally.
In 2018, the USAF awarded a contract worth up to $480m for the design of a second hypersonic weapon prototype.
Awarded to Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, the contract will include the delivery of critical design review, test and production readiness support for the USAF’s ARRW.
